Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts. For many Americans, this verdict brought a palpable sense of relief and the feeling that justice had been served. We at Corwin share this feeling of relief, and commend Darnella Frazier for her courage in filming the murder of George Floyd, which helped to prove that the violence that many Americans have chosen to ignore exists.
In a just society, George Floyd would still be alive. In a just society, racial profiling, knees on necks of Black men, and a criminal justice system that is plagued by systemic racism would not be tolerated.
Black lives matter. We are at a moment of reckoning with race in the US, and we must choose to use our power and privilege for the greater good and make a firm commitment to antiracist actions. We mourn the loss of George Floyd and countless Black Americans who have been crushed by centuries of systemic racism, but we cannot rest until those who have been unaffected are committed to action.
